     Nelson Mandela was the iconic figure , somehow the hero of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa fighting for an egalitarian and democratic South African society .Born in 1918, a lawyer by training , he became a member of the African National Congress (English ANC) in 1943 and quickly became one of the leaders. It is hardening the position of the ANC against apartheid ( civil disobedience campaign in 1952, creating an armed wing , Umkhonto we Sizwe , in 1961 ) he will be sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 . He spent 27 years in his life. He was freed in 1990 after 18 years on Robben Island, Pollsmoor 6 years , and then under house arrest. But the ANC managed to kneel apartheid with the support of the South African population ( 70-80% black population) and the growing support of the international community. In 1993 , he was awarded (jointly with FW de Klerk , the white president of South Africa at the time) the Nobel Peace Prize . Nelson Mandela was elected the first black president of the Republic of South Africa during the country's first multiracial elections in 1994.
